"Thus the laughter of migrants is extinguished" published by Karthala

This universal story about migration and exile was published posthumously.

August 24, 2001. It was around 2:30 in the morning. The streets of Paris were stiflingly hot. Ismaël walked heavily along Boulevard de la Chapelle, a bundle on his back. Since leaving Ivory Coast, he had walked dozens of kilometers, perhaps a hundred. He was hungry, very hungry, as he had been every day for several weeks. Weakened and emaciated, he could see the receding contours of his bony silhouette in the reflection of the store windows. As he walked, all his thoughts were with Armand, his twin brother. He would not follow him on this adventure. He and a few others would not come to Europe. Fate had decided so. Ismaël and Armand were separated for the first time. And this separation was the worst thing he had ever known. Time would surely soften the burning pain of the present; a sharp, intense pain. Another loved one added to the loss. Cut off from his other half, he had to continue on his path and fight so that all this had not been for nothing. He would draw his strength from this uncertain future.
