Patricia E. Bath (1942 – 2019)

American ophthalmologist and researcher

Patricia E. Bath studied medicine at Howard University and then specialized in ophthalmology. In 1976, she founded the Institute for the Prevention of Blindness. Five years later, she made this revolutionary invention in the field of ophthalmology. Indeed, she developed a laser surgery technique for removing cataracts. She named it the "LaserphacoProbe." She patented her invention in no fewer than four countries: Japan, Germany, Canada, and the United States. Dr. Patricia E. Bath's research earned her several distinctions: she was elected an honorary fellow at the University of California (UCLA) Medical Center in 1988, and she was inducted into the Hunter College Hall of Fame in 2001. The American Medical Women's Association honored her by designating her as one of the most remarkable women in the United States.
